The Prior John

Restaurant | Bridlington | England | United Kingdom

Traditional British pub cuisine

"The Prior John" in Bridlington, England, is a classic pub and restaurant of the well-known British Wetherspoon chain, distinguished by its generous architecture and central location on the promenade of the popular coastal resort. Named after John de Tweng, a former prior of the medieval monastery in Bridlington, the establishment combines historical references with typical Wetherspoon charm: affordable food, a wide selection of drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. It is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists alike, who wish to end their day by the sea with a meal or a drink.

Family-friendly restaurant in Bridlington

The menu at "The Prior John" offers a variety of British pub classics with a focus on hearty, satisfying dishes. Notably, the "Traditional Fish and Chips" features fish served in a crispy batter, accompanied by golden, fluffy chips—a dish that reflects the proximity to the sea and is often mentioned as a favorite. Also popular is the "Mixed Grill," a generous combination of various meats such as steak, lamb, and sausages, served with sides like peas and onion rings. For vegetarians, there are tasty alternatives such as the "Five-Bean Chilli," which impresses with its spicy notes and a serving of rice. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" tempts with its warm, sweet sponge cake drizzled with rich caramel sauce, often served with vanilla ice cream, leaving a comforting sensation.

Table service ordering in pub

The ordering process is typical for Wetherspoon: guests can either order at the bar or use the convenient app to order food and drinks directly to their table. The drinks menu is another highlight, featuring a wide selection of hand-pulled real ales that change regularly, appealing to beer lovers, as well as a variety of lagers, ciders, and wines. The option to enjoy "bottomless" coffee or tea is particularly appreciated, making the breakfast offerings—such as the "Traditional English Breakfast" with bacon, eggs, and grilled tomatoes—even more attractive.

Affordable food and drinks

The décor of "The Prior John" is impressive: a striking glass roof over the entrance allows natural light to flood in, giving the space an open and airy atmosphere. The interior combines modern elements with a touch of traditional pub character, including wooden furnishings and cozy lighting. It is family-friendly, with a special children's menu and ample space, although it can get quite busy during peak times like weekends or the summer season. The staff is generally friendly and efficient, although there may occasionally be wait times during high traffic, and cleanliness—such as table maintenance—is not always perfect.

Poor service at the bar. Lots of staff but no one communicating the breakdown in service. A very rude member of staff was extremely obnoxious when asked about the situation. Better customer care service training required.

We went this afternoon. It was fairly empty so it lacked a bit of atmosphere. However, it had the usual choice of Wetherspoon's drinks and food. Great choice, great prices. Strongly recommend the mixed grill.

We entered the prior John in Bridlington around 1507hrs on Saturday 8th February 2025, there was a group if 5 of us waiting at the bar to be served for drinks before we sat down... and we were going to order food but after waiting 10 minutes for drinks not even being acknowledged by any of the staff.. we left premises disgusted. There was at least 4 bar staff behind bar and the manager Sandy was also behind there aswell.. people were getting served at the other side of the bar before our party of 5.. it's disgusting.. I have worked behind bars and you look who is next not just the person in front of you.. we walked out..

Most of the staff are good.... it's Wetherspoons what you get is what you get. Excellent pricing on some lovely real ales. You really need to stock gift cards.
